The Nerdist Way

I just want to start off to say this book changed my life in many many profound ways.  Before I go into my review I just want to take this time in my post to thank Chris Hardwick ( @nerdist on twitter) even though I know he will never read this review.  Without further ado I give you

The Nerdist Way: How To Reach The Next Level.... In Real Life
By: Chris Hardwick
Audio Book voiced by Chris Hardwick

This book released on hard cover back on November 1st 2011 (According to Amazon).  If you know Chris Hardwick you may think of the guy who shouts POINTS! on @Midnight or the host of the Talking Dead and Host of Nerdist On BBC amongst many other things.  But at one point he was an author.  When I first ordered this book I was expecting a comedy filled auto biography (because I read those from time to time). What I got was a book that showed me ways to get out of my own way and forge ahead with my idea.  "JUST FUCKING DO IT." Is a quote in the book that resonated with me when I was coming up with the Idea of Generation Nerd.  But enough of me pro-fusing my love for this book.

The Nerdist Way is broken down into three parts.  1. Mind; 2. Body; 3. Time.  Each part told through auto biographical narration of the authors life combined with thought provoking theories. Shape each part of the book and gives the reader things to think about; take away ideas; and helps the reader to find ways to be a better human in general.

One way in which he helps you is by RPGing your life.  Meaning by creating a visual representation of your honest assessment of yourself and your skills.  It helps you build up Experience Points that you set the values one to help you obtain goals and grow in your life.  He uses a dumbed down form of the Dungeons and Dragons character sheets for you to model your character sheet after. (Though I personally think the World Of Darkness sheet would be more applicable and easier to manipulate than D&D's).  As you go through the book you add to this sheet in sections of the books called Charactersize which means it is a work out for you to do in the chapter.

One of the main points the book makes throughout is this.  "Nerds are hyper self aware and have intense focusing capabilities."  It shows you many ways in which you can use your intense focusing skills to create and become better at everything you could want to do in life.

It goes over a wide variety of topics.  From stress and anxiety, to conquering fears and addiction.  Even during those sections of the book the author stresses you to seek professional help if you truly need it and not to just take his advice or what he is saying in the book.  Which is an excellent thing to do.  In the body section he gives you a basics guideline on things you can do to start you in the direction of a healthy body constructed by his personal trainer.  In the section Time it gives the readers ways to increase productivity; manage time; how to set up goals and reach for them (on a deeper level)

Overall I highly recommend this book.  As I stated earlier it changed my life for the better and I continue to go back and read and listen to it.  My very simple review does not do the book justice.  Chris Hardwick is a much more eloquent writer and speaker than I am.  I implore you.  Go out and read this book.  I give this book a 9 out of 10.  You can find it on sale at Amazon and Barnes & Nobels

Suicide Squad Movie....This Won't End Well

DC Comics has decided to make a film adaptation of the Suicide Squad.  An obscure government funded group of convicts implanted with explosives into their skulls are sent on missions to make the world a better place.....  FUN TIMES!?... Right?..... Right???  Lets take a look at how this can all go oh so wrong.

Writers: Ross Andru; Robert Kanigher; John Ostrander and Justin Marks.  So Three of the comic's writers and one screenplay writer.  The Screenplay writer Justin Marks is known for his work on Street Fighter The Legend of Chun-Li.....

Director: David Ayer I have some hope for.  He has a good few movies that did fairly well under his belt in both directing and writing and producing.

The Cast this is where a movie can be made or broken if not done right.

IMDB has some of the cast listed as rumored and IGN has the cast as confirmed. Hmmmm  Lets analyze

Jared Leto: Joker (IMDB Not listed at all not even rumored; IGN is saying Confirmed)
Tom Hardy: Rick Flag (According to IGN) Simply Rumored and not given a character by IMDB
Jai Courtney: Boomerang (According to IGN) Deadshot (Rumored According to IMDB)
Will Smith: Deadshot (According to IGN) and listed as Simply Rumored and without a character by IMDB
Margot Robbie: Harley Quinn (According to IGN) Confirmed on IMDB
Cara Delevingne: Enchantress (According to IGN) Not listed on IMDB
Jesse Eisenberg: Lex Luther (Listed as Rumored in both IMDB and IGN)

Why the Joker?  The Joker has NEVER been a member of Suicide Squad in ANY of it's incarnations so why throw The Clown Prince of Crime into this rag tag group?  For the Harley/Joker love story?  It doesn't work with the premise of the story.  Even by the groups leader Amanda Waller's standards finds Joker far to unstable.  There is no need to throw Joker into the mix.  For that matter there is no need to throw Lex Luther into the mix either.  Unless they are going to go a new route and have The Joker and Lex combine forces to create The Suicide Squad... I can see that working but the partnership would be far to strained to last long.

What would the story even be like.  As Amanda Waller isn't even listed as a character who is going to be the Nick Fury of this unstable group of bomb strapped expendables?

Why Tom Hardy? He has been established as Bane and a damn good Bane to boot.  Why have him portray Rick Flag? By this I am guessing it is going to be the grandson as the original Rick Flag was in the WWII incarnation of Suicide Squad.

Needless to say I am not all that hopeful for this movie.  However I will continue to keep my eye on the development of this movie.

Update:  nerdist.com has confirmed the cast of Suicide Squad still having Lex Luther as just being rumored.  Adding to the rumored cast list.  Amanda Waller has 3 possible actresses.  Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, or even possibly Oprah Winfrey

Wifi Made An Easy Game Easier

On November 21st 2014 The Pokemon Company released Pokemon Omega Ruby and  Alpha Sapphire.  A remake of the much beloved Ruby; Sapphire; Emerald.  The game sports the 3DS graphical upgrade, the charming touches from X&Y and for those of you who have the handheld console 3D graphics.  Minus the touch they gave to Heart Gold and Soul Silver of being able to have your first slot Pokemon follow behind you while in the over world.

After ten years we are treated to a graphical upgrade to a game that redefined the series with implementation of being able to choose the gender of your character and not getting your pokemon from a sterile lab but throwing you right into a battle.  The Hoenn Region has not changed at all save for the real world references it makes.    The games story has not changed.  You are still the child of a gym leader who just shipped his family up from Jhoto.  You still have to stop Team Magma and Team Aqua from trying to destroy the world with Land or Water dominance.

From the opening cut scene you are treated to a visually smoother and richer Hoenn Region, the land is more fleshed out much like in the newer Pokemon games.  You start off with your NavGear like in the original game.  But here is where things get wonky.  You get upgrades to it like a radar that helps you detect near by potentially rare Pokemon.  From what I am told the more you use it the easier it is for the radar to pick out rarer subtypes of Pokemon.  Once you reach the town your father is in you are given the ability to play online with others.  It gives you the options you had in X&Y to Wonder Trade, Battle, Trade, Global Trade anytime anywhere......

This is where my beef with the new games lay.  Wifi has made an easy game easier.  The ability to connect to the internet without the need to hook it up to a line or a special device you have to shell out cash for.  Each game has a mystery gift event pokemon that you get when you  launch the mystery gift feature.  You recieve a Shiny Beldum..... so essentially you are giving a hard to find Steel Type to a new player where there is no elemental weakness for it in the first couple of areas..... Way to break the game right out of the gate.  With the Wifi feature you can essentially get anything you want within minutes or if you know friends who already have what you want you can trade or get better Pokemon and get through the game faster.  Lets not forget that the series started making it less challenging when you gave out experience for catching Pokemon.  The Experience Share Item makes leveling easier cause it effects EVERYONE on your team.  There is no challenge anymore, no more need to go to the surrounding area and train to figure out patterns to beating the leaders team.

Maybe it is because I am getting older or maybe I am just so jaded to everything.  It just seems like these new innovations to games are just pandering to the GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME youth of today.  Innovation in games is good, but when you dumb down your content to pander that is when you lose what made you great.  Why spend so much time innovating and making great new features when they will lose their novelty quickly.  When you can use WiFi to battle, trade and beat the game with little to no effort.

I give this game a 3 out of 5.  Why?  On a grand scale the game is playable, it is fun.  But the story has been done already.  The enemies have not improved.  The game world itself has not changed to a point where it can be differentiated from it's source game.  As a fan of the series I would have much rather waited a few years for the next generation to be created instead of getting an updated version of a game I already have.  The graphics nice, the music still nice.  Make the game more difficult and stop dumbing it down.

A Long Overdue Review

Square Enix the creator of some of the most well known and arguably best RPGs of the next gen consoles.  I say arguably because there is many fans of their series who love their work and other fans who absolutely hate what they have done to the series they control.  Let us dive into what I view as the absolute WORST game in the Square Enix library of games.

Final Fantasy XIII

Spanning a total of three games.  Final Fantasy XIII takes place in a dual world.  Gran Pulse and Cacoon, for the most part of the story you find yourself on Gran Pulse and the world you see around you is on a graphical level..... BEAUTIFUL.  The world looks well articulated, well designed leaving you in a sense of wonder of what will come once you explore it....... That is where the game quickly falls apart.  Your limits of exploration is what is down the hallway.  I am not even kidding, you are forced to take your character down a ridiculously long hallway looking around like there is hope of exploration.  This perpetual hallwayism as I call it, stems from XIII's predecessor Final Fantasy X another beautiful setting which forces you to follow a strict path pushing ever forward.  When you give your players this beautiful backdrop do you expect them to just go.  "OH WOW.... hey next point in the trip... oh there's stuff in the background.  Nope not caring."  You do such a huge disservice to your fans when you put so much time into the world only to make just look at it.

Allow me to give you a good example of a BEAUTIFUL game that doesn't force it's players to a strict path.  Skyrim, with it's rich and beautiful world.  Fully articulated and programed to a point where the players can become immersed and forget life for awhile.  Do not get me wrong Skyrim isn't perfect but for what it is, it blows Final Fantasy XIII out of the water.

The story of Final Fantasy XIII starts off with such promise.  It builds up this grand over arcing theme only to become what Final Fantasy X was.  A story driven by some mythical creature that feeds off of the people and forces them to do their bidding else something bad will happen..... And it is so vague as to what it is you have to do.  Even the characters are like "Uhhhh what the F$*%& are we suppose to do?"  As the player I am sitting their going "Yeah.... What The $*%& is going on....".  The story progression doesn't give you any clue as to what is suppose to be going on.  Other than some deity thing just gave me and my friends super powers.... BUT WE MUST PERFORM SOME TASK IN WHICH I WILL ONLY SHOW YOU A GLIMPSE OF...... Come on the story can only go so far on this premise and it insults your creators intelligence and creativity when they had stories of much grander scales told on far less superior graphics with text blocks explaining what was going on.

It is my fear that with the innovation of graphics the story is being protrayed in cut scenes rather than in the fashion of a story that is being told as you progress.  If you are going to blow your money load on graphics why not just nix the game play and switch to CGI movies?  Final Fantasy since X has proven that they are no slouches when it comes to graphical cut scenes in games.  But saddly more money is made when you mass produce it and put game play into it.

Surely Hiei even with the story so bad and the hallway being just two things of bad points in this review there must be something good.  A bad story can be forgiven if the game play is good.....RIGHT?...WELL RIGHT?

In most cases yes you would be right.  But this is not one of those cases.  Final Fantasy XIII is the first game in the entirety of the franchise to force the player to control just one character.  This limits your options as you are forced to relay on the AI to control your teammates and HOPE they can be tactical.  While AI learns and regurgitates working patterns.  It lacks what a human mind can process, such as tweaking a plan on the fly and being able to direct your actions to save the team from doom and get back into a rythem to beat your foe.  You have the option to switch things up with paradigm shifts but again you are still controling just one person and not being able to control the actions of your teammates.

Another aspect of XIII is the Star Rating.  One being bad, five being you are super amazingly awesome.  The stars are what fills up your character's summon meter..... WHY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHY?  WHY DID YOU OVER COMPLICATE A SYSTEM LIKE SUMMONING.  It turns battles into button mashing cause the only way to get a five star rating in battle is through speed.  You made this system so underwhelming it is terrible.

The battles are pointless and needlessly challenging.  You have bosses that will just aggravate the ever loving crap out of you cause they regenerate health.  Even low level enemies do this at times.  I am at a lose for any semblance of coherent thought that went into this process.  Another thing you get from battles (besides the urge to rage quit) is crystium points.  Yes folks final fantasy XIII has pulled another note from Final Fantasy X.  The Crystium System or as I like to call it Sphere Grid 1.5.  Take away sphere levels and replace it with Crystium points and make it so you can pick and chose what you get.  Oh and make it so if you don't have enough CP you can't fully progress to the next part of the job.  You have Sphere Grid 1.5.  It is an exact replica of The Sphere Grid from X minus one continuous path and needing the right amount of points to level up.

The one thing I will give Final Fantasy XIII.  The music.  The soundtrack for XIII is stunningly beautiful to listen too with some very catchy beats on certain levels of the games.  But music is not enough to save this collapsed hallway of a game.  Final Fantasy has fallen victim to trying to innovate way way to much.  It has lost it's path since the jump to the better graphics.  Stories feel rush and vague.  Battle Systems goes to the crapper really quickly.  Sneak mechanics in a final fantasy game.  Just don't work.  There was no need for two sequels to this series.  Final Fantasy XIII took everything wrong with X and made it 1000 times worse.

I recommend playing older Final Fantasy Games over XIII the game just has too much wrong with it.  XIII-2 was too little too late in terms of game play.  And XIII-3 Lightnings Return is a straight up rip off of X-2 with changing clothes to change jobs on the fly and with only 1 person to control.  Square Enix has plagiarized themselves with this game.

Excerpt From my Personal Writing Project

The Majestic Theater
Present Day Midnight

The lights of The Majestic Theater had finally fallen for the night.  The sounds of cleaning machines were all that could be heard.  Cameras turned on, the security team were in separate stations on each floor.  Guarding the theater was boring work most of the guards slept through the night, waking only to check on the night cleaning crew.

Walter Prince, recently promoted to head of security for The Majestic by the owner himself.  While the others slept, Walter worked and watched the cameras.  Tonight something felt off to Walter he couldn’t describe what it was that he was feeling.  He just knew that something was going to go down. “All floors check in every hour.”  Why couldn’t he shake this feeling he had.

The clock struck twelve thirty, and the feeling kept getting stronger.  “All units, I want you alert and ready to check in.  Please copy.”  He said again into the walkie talkie.  When the ground floor didn’t check in his heart began to race.  “Ground floor units.  Radio check please.”  Still no responses came.  Walter picked up his collapsible baton, the one piece of security he carried since he could not carry a gun on this job.

Even as Walter made his way to the first station, he noticed that the sounds of the floor buffers and carpet vacuums were gone.  Everything had gotten tense as he saw his friend slumped in a corner.  “Oh shit Andy!”  Walter rushed over and checked for a pulse…. it was there but it was faint.  Something had knocked him out.  He slapped his back pocket and found no cell phone.  Shit must have left it in the booth.  He thought as he looked around and then turned to head back to the booth.  “HOLY SHIT. Don’t sneak up on me like…..” Walter registered the sound of his supposed second in command clicking the hammer of a gun into place and placing the gun on his chest above his heart.

Walter froze in place someone he trusted had him at gunpoint.  What was going on. Why didn’t he just stay in the booth and work on his reports.

The gunman put a phone to his ear.  “Yeah boss, I found the straggler.  What should I do.”  He waited for the response and than grinned and pulled the gun away only to slam the butt of it into Walter’s head knocking him out.

The last thought that ran through Walter’s head was why did I have to be right.

………………………………………..

A lone figure looked up at the main prop of Phantom of the Opera; the Chandelier.  “Come now Oliver.  You have nothing to say?  Nothing to threaten me with?  No grand speech to dissuade me? Nothing to say before you realize it was I who ended you?”  He grinned and let out a laugh as he went to the stage and jumped up onto it.  “It is too bad you will not be around to see me bring your precious city down to the bedrock and rebuild it free of the Camarilla cancer."

The phone in his pocket rang so he picked it up and put it to his ear.  “Speak.”  His only command to the person on the line.  He listened.  “Knock him out and bring him to me.”  He said and listened to the satisfying crunch of metal on bone.  The figure looked to the chandelier.  “Your chosen one is on his way…. Did you hand pick him or did your senchel force you to pick him.  No matter in your dieing moments….. you will watch as I make him my child.”

…………………………………………………

Oliver Barton prince of New York City, slowly came too.  Cursed kine must have been drugged, it is the only way to explain how I was so easily taken.  Oliver thought as he assessed his situation.  Stake in the back with the tip just touching his heart.  Another stake in his side also with the tip just touching his heart.  One final stake in his chest his free side was tied in place.  Moving was impossible without getting staked for his efforts.  He had to think of something.

"Ron and Hermione Would Have Needed Couples Counseling"

Author of the beloved Harry Potter series came out on February 2nd stating "Ron and Hermione were never suppose to get married in my original vision."  The author went on to explain that Harry should have ended up marrying Hermione, but for personal reasons she altered the coupling.  Further more J.K. Rowling also stated that.  "Ron and Hermione would have needed couples counseling as the marriage went on."  For those of us who read the books we have come to accept the coupling and hearing this news has made many fans get angry.

Screaming such things like.

"Great now I have to hear the god damn Harmonie (Harry Hermione) shippers* say I told you so."  (See bottom of page for definition of shippers and Shipping)

"Well now I can finally tell people my Ron and Katie Bell fanfics are plausible."

"First Dumbledore and now this.  Whats next J.K. Rowling are you going to tell me that Draco Malfoy's hatred of Hermione extended from the fact she wanted Harry and not him?"

"NOOOOO MY CHILDHOOD IS RUINED!!"

My personal favorite thing I have heard on this.

"Well maybe Harry Potter books will go the way of Game of Thrones and Ron will Sleep with his sister Ginny out of revenge."

Even in the media world it has made a buzz.  Having notable nerds like Stephen Colbert and Chris Hardwick talking about it on there respective TV shows (The Colbert Report and @Midnight).  Needless to say no matter which couple you shipped in Harry Potter, this news has made fans young and old excited and angry.  Thank you J.K. Roweling for making nerd news possible and wide spread.

* Shipping: Short for Relationship, it is the act of put two or more characters you like into relationships and basing facts in the book or series to support your theories.

Shippers: A group of people who have paired the same characters into the same relationship.

The Throne Of Games

Season two started last night!
And if ya'll are anything like me, it was the highlight of the evening. (Granted, I don't know what all comes on Thursday nights.) The biggest challenge of the night was that they played Nerdditch. Their version of Quidditch, if you didn't catch onto that. And if ya'll are anything like me, you're sitting your nerdy bum on the couch and judging the ever living goodness out of each and everyone of those nerds.
Sure, they're all majorly more successful than I will ever be, seeing as I can hardly do simple math, there'd be on way that I could manage being a rocket scientist, any sort of chemist or... Honestly anything with any sort of genuine success roped into it. I'm a college drop out for crying out loud.
Now, in my world, if you didn't know that an owl was NOT the only animal that was on the list of things for first year students at Hogwarts, we can't be friends. Let me get back on point here... If your defining nerd trait is that you're a Japanophile, honey you need to realize right off the bat, that to these other nerds, you're useless. To the people that can solve a rubix cube in under ten seconds, and can dish out chemical compounds for anything that you eat... Knowing Japanese doesn't seem like something that'll help them.
In any case. I'll gladly sit my ass on the couch and claim that I'm a nerd, and answer all of these questions and feel that I can win these challenges. But lets face facts; I'm not that cool nor would they ever pick a Staples Easy Tech Associate to be on the show.
For whatever legal purpose we may or may not need here. GN does not own the above image, nor do we have any legal rights to it.

Welcome To The Fold

I figured I'd take a quick moment to introduce myself and tell you what wonderful things that Adam and I have in store for 2014.
Firstly:
Hi, I'm Andi.
I'm a bit insane most of the time, but I'll certainly make you laugh, and if not laugh, at least one of those 'lol' moments where you just exhale a quick breath through your nose in amusement. I can't really say that I specialize in one part of Geekdom but more often than not I dabble in a little bit of everything. I love movies, old and new; I love music, my little world would stop moving if I ever stopped having music. Adam has brought me on as a female voice to the site; and sadly yes that comes with those pesky female opinions. Don't worry, we wont be burning bra's at GN.

Secondly:
After a brief discussion with Sir Adam, the Ruler of the GN world, there have been a few things that are decidedly going to be happening with the site.
  • More frequent posts: This could mean anything from a quick "The British Are Coming!" To an in depth, full on nerd review of a game, movie, album, anything.
  • Collaboration posts: At some point, Adam will give all of the contributors, himself included; a topic. That topic will have a due date and a post limit. Each of the collaborators are going to speak their mind about the topic and our opinions are going to go straight to the board.
  • All of the pretty lights: I'm making my way through the coding to try to make things prettier, more 'shiny' if you will.
So I hope that you'll all stick around for 2014, learn and grow with us here at GN.
